It’s only natural for visitors of Knoxville Zoo in East Tennessee to feel they have left the hustle and bustle of the city and are walking into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park when entering the zoo’s front gate. After all, the zoo planned it that way.
The East Tennessee feeling is revealed as visitors approach the zoo along Knoxville Zoo Drive off Interstate 40. As they arrive, it grows more natural with more than 200 trees and shrubs native to East Tennessee along the roads and in the parking area.
That Smoky Mountain feeling continues inside the zoo’s plaza at Black Bear Falls. The exhibit was recreated from a setting in the Smoky Mountains. It highlights East Tennessee’s most recognized animal, the black bear.

Memphis Zoo
Memphis, Tennessee
Don't miss all the fun and excitement this summer at the Memphis, Tennessee Zoo! Explore Cat Country, Primate Canyon, Animals of the Night, Once Upon a Farm, Dragon's Lair, Tropical Bird House, Herpetarium, Aquarium and more. At the Memphis Zoo you can venture into the world of over 3,000 animal residents, as well as keeper chats, animal shows, Memphis Zoo shop, Discovery Center and rides.
The Memphis Zoo is currently exhibiting one of only four pairs of Giant Pandas in the United States (the others are in Atlanta, Washington D.C. and San Diego).
There are only about 1,000 Giant Pandas in the wild. They are one of the rarest animals in the world. Having a pair so close is a great opportunity to see something most people will never get to see.
Memphis Zoo's Giant Pandas are Le-le and Ya-ya. Le-le (pronounced luh luh), the female, is 2. She comes from the Beijing Zoo in China. Her name means "beautiful little girl." Ya-ya (pronounced yah yah), the male , is 4. He comes from the Chongquing Zoo in China. His name means "Happy happy."
Memphis' China exhibit is worthy of such special creatures. It's design simulates a bamboo forest in China. There is an extra $3 conservation fee to enter the China exhibit so be prepared. Your $3 buys you a timed ticket for a 15 minute viewing period in which you will watch a short film about pandas and conservation. After watching, you get to wander the large exhibit.
